Bangkok Transport Episode 5

Underground next!

Experiencing Bangkok the Skytrain Way

The Bangkok Skytrain was launched for the first time on the birthday of HM King, on Dec. 5th 1999. For the routinely crammed-for-space Bangkok, the Skytrain turned out to be like a boon. Life has now become very easier for the millions of the city’s residents with the Bangkok Skytrain. This mass transport public system is very efficient, clean, and comparatively cheap, providing for a quick transport mode across the city at affordable rates.

The Bangkok Skytrain stations are adequate to cater to typical traveler requirements. They have many different kiosks that offer food items, and coffee, and also a vast range of other products like mobiles. Now, with the advent of the computerized automated ticket system, more time can be saved. You would however need to pay out the exact change. An enjoyable aspect of using the Bangkok Skytrain is that you can get an awesome feel and view of the Bangkok city.

The system is still not perfect though, as the unending flight of stairs to the train can be quite intimidating and deterrent to the senior and disabled passengers. This is a problem that can be solved though, by use of elevators. Currently Bangkok is negotiating on the installation of such fast elevators.

The rates for a typical train journey are relatively affordable and are around 10 (25c) and 30 Baht (75c) for a short transit. Frequent travelers can take out passes and value cards.

People living in central Bangkok mostly travel by the Bangkok Skytrain now. Using the cab or other road transport service is a thought most of these people would never even remotely entertain. The Bangkok Skytrain is the best choice, speedy, and very easy on the pocket too.

Visitors to Bangkok will enjoy the convenience offered by the Bangkok Skytrain, as they go around sightseeing and adventuring. As a visitor, no matter where you go and what you do, you need a place to rest and enjoy a comfortable night’s sleep. If you intend to stay for a longer time period, your best option is a Bangkok apartment. A Bangkok service apartment will give you the comfort, services, facilities and affordability necessary for long-term stays.

The Skytrain: Revolutionizing Public Transport

The Bangkok Skytrain or the BTS is an elevated rail transportation system that is used in the Thai capital of Bangkok; the system is operated by Bangkok Mass Transit System. This pubic transportation system has revolutionized public transport in Bangkok, the highly congested and traffic filled roads of Bangkok make commuting via road virtually impossible and if at all very time consuming and tedious. The BTS was ceremonially opened in 1999 and is a system that has 23 stations strategically located along two lines.

The central station of the Bangkok Skytrain is located at Siam Square which is a popular shopping district and commercial nerve centre in Bangkok. The two lines that are used by the Skytrain are known as the Sukhumvit line and the Silom line and have a combined distance of 23 kilometers. Of the two the longer Sukhumvit line stretches 17 kilometers and runs from On Nut all the way up to Mo Chit. The Sukhumvit line passes through many of Bangkok’s entertainment districts such as Saphan Kwai, Nana and Thong Lo It also goes through the shopping district of Siam Square- where the Central Station is located and the where passengers can move on to the Silom line and Asok which is close to the Robinson’s department store.

The shorter Silom line measures 6.5 kilometers and winds it way through Silom, Sathorn, the Central Business District and ends at the National Stadium. The BTS has definitely revolutionized the manner in which Thai’s and tourists travel, now within a matter of minutes you can whiz off to any place in Bangkok, gliding over rooftops and shopping malls. Though an underground metro rail system was in place prior to the Skytrain, the trip is not as convenient or as scenic as traveling on the BTS.

The Skytrain passes close to some of the city’s major hotels and resorts and to experience the attractions of Bangkok tourists are advised to book in to a place that is located close to a BTS station such as the President Park, which is a Bangkok apartment.

For some of you who have already visited Bangkok for few times may be familiar with this kind of transport. They are a kind of non-air condition taxi, which you can ask them to take you to anywhere in Bangkok area. The most distinct advantage of using Tuk Tuk is the price is really cheap and you can negotiate for the fare before you decide to take it. The first rule of thumb of using Tuk Tuk is you MUST negotiate to get cheaper price and this is possible. Normally you can negotiate for up to 50 – 100 Baht less that what the driver offer, if the driver refuses to discount, do not waste your time with him, and just go for another one. However, by taking Tuk Tuk, apart from you can get cheaper price, it is also allows you to see outside environment when you travel so they are quite suitable for some of you who love open-air transport and enjoy Bangkok sightseeing. There are some cautions that you have to consider when using Tuk Tuk, you must choose the car that in good condition and has valid yellow registration plate. It is also possible to ask to see driving license of the driver in case of emergency and while Tuk Tuk is running, you should be careful and hold the rail of a car tightly, especially if you have your child, you must hold them with your body for safety while Tuk Tuk is running too.

2. Bus
It is quite common for Bankokians to take bus, but for foreign travellers, especially first time travellers to get confused. This is because there are almost five hundred bus lines throughout Bangkok. However, bus is the cheapest transport in Bangkok. There is information about Bangkok bus line available in tourist information center around Bangkok area. The disadvantage of bus transport is you have to know the name of destination that you are going to visit, so it seems to be very difficult for first visit travellers. Therefore, if you intend to use bus as you major transport, make sure that you study about bus routes, number as well as the name of destinations that you are going to visit.

3. Air-conditioned taxi
This is probably the most convenient way of transport and it is also cost a lot too. Fare is varied depends on the distance of your travel. The distance and fare will be automatically calculated by electronic meter so you do not have to ask for fare quote or make negotiations. All you have to do is know the name of destination and tell the driver.
