Hospitals in Bangkok generally provide excellent facilities for their patients. Apart from the top-class facilities offered to patients of local origin, most hospitals cater to foreign patients and are all set up for that.
There are technical equipments of the highest class and all the expertise you need is also provided. For instance, it is comparatively easy to take an MRI of your brain of limbs if you want, while at least in some so called developed countries in Europe, this is not always the case. If you undergo some surgery, even if it requires epidural anesthesia the procedures you go through are very well arranged, and you will feel in safe hands altogether when going for treatment.
The doctor may not be available all the time as can be seen in Europe or the U.S. ,but the nursing staff will give you all the attention you require, to such an extent that it might be tough to get a good sleep in hospital, because they will monitor you around the clock to check on your condition.
The cost of treatment looks to be well calculated, and not at random. You will be informed before treatment about the resulting price and you pay in advance. There is a possibility for small extra costs or reimbursements and they can be settled before discharge. The fees of the doctors are not notably less, even though less than what you would spend in Europe and surely the U.S. you will be astonished when you hear the low costs for nursing care, the room etc.
Calculate your room and nursing costs for almost 3,000-6,000 baht per day only. So if you are puzzled and uneasy departing the hospital soon, and being rooted to your hotel room, just try to delay your departure from the hospital a little, where you do not have to be to be too much concerned, in the event some additional problem surfaces.
Outpatient treatment is also well arranged in most hospitals in Bangkok. At least here you are not required to pay in advance. The doctor’s fee is very also very affordable and will be in the 500-800 bath range. Regarding the fees of other services, a standard chest X-ray costs about 250 baht, electrocardiogram 500 baht, MRI (including radiologist fee) about 10,000 baht, standard blood examination (including lipid profile) about 3000-4000 baht.
Apart from having up-to-date facilities and offering a calm and peaceful environment, most hospitals in Bangkok offers enviable traffic control in almost all parts of the region. Bangkok provides you quick and easy access and excellent transportation facilities. Reaching almost every hospital from most roads in Bangkok is relatively easy. Besides the superb facilities for the vehicles Bangkok also sincerely attempt to provide attractive service for pedestrians as well even if they are crossing a road or doing something else.
If you are planning to receive treatment from a hospital in Asia, there will be few better choices than the medical service offered by Bangkok.
Private healthcare in the West is notoriously expensive, for some, prohibitively so. Commonplace medical items like dentistry or health check ups are high-priced, while surgery and major operations can completely bankrupt many individuals. Thus, the rapidly-growing practice of traveling across international borders to obtain healthcare.
Many have found their solutions in Thailand, spurring a trend in “health tourism” within the country. Why Thailand? Because the Thai medical profession is one of the most advanced in the region. Thailand’s hospitals and clinics are world class. Investments in equipment and management standards are so high that major hospitals are “internationally accredited”.
The following are some “ball park” cost comparisons. The cost of surgery can be one-tenth of what it is in the United States or Western Europe, and sometimes even less. A heart-valve replacement that would cost $200,000 or more in the US, for example, goes for $10,000 and that includes round-trip airfare and a brief vacation package. Similarly, a metal-free dental bridge worth $5,500 in the US costs around $500. A knee replacement in Thailand with six days of physical therapy costs about one-fifth of what it would in the US. Lasik eye surgery worth $3,700 in the US is available for around $730. In the US cataract surgery for one eye runs around $8,000, but at a prestigious International hospital in Thailand cataract surgery can be performed on both eyes for around $2,500. Cosmetic surgery savings are even greater: A full facelift that would cost $20,000 in the US runs about $1,200. A thorough dental cleaning and checkup runs around $10.00.
Tourists are drawn to Thailand for many reasons – tropical beauty, splendid beaches, and a fascinating culture. Now however, health is yet another reason that lures visitors to the kingdom. Thailand has become the spa capital of Asia. The country abounds in health clubs and spas, and offers an incredible amount of sporting activities, everything from golfing to scuba diving, and from biking to cave exploring.
Thai Airlines features what is known as Royal Orchid Holidays. Medical checkups, has become so important, Royal Orchid Holidays has added medical checkups to its package tours. It’s an unusual theme for a package tour, perhaps, but a very practical one, giving travelers the opportunity to have a comprehensive medical checkup while they are in Thailand for business or pleasure. Quality healthcare combined with a tourism holiday at a low price attracts patients from all over the world.
On the medical side, an Internet search of the International hospitals in Bangkok will provide all the information necessary regarding medical procedures available and the related costs. While the list is long, to start, your search should include the popular Bumrungrad Hospital, Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej Hospital, and Bangkok Nursing Home Hospital. They are all internationally accredited hospitals.
On the tourism side, Thailand is known as The Land of Smiles. It is often referred to as the most exotic country in Southeast Asia. In Bangkok a visit to the Grand Palace is a must see. Trips to a floating market or to the Bridge on the River Kwai, or other popular destinations, are easily arranged and inexpensive, even with a personal driver. A short flight or overnight train trip and you can be enjoying the pristine beaches in the Southern Islands or the Northern mountains with its waterfalls, elephants bathing in mountain streams, and Hill Tribe villages.
Consider Health Tourism in Thailand. You will readily see that you can have a medical procedure, and a wonderful holiday, all at less cost that you would have paid for the medical procedure alone in the West.
In Bangkok, there are endless things to enjoy. So, many tourists end up with fully exhausted body at the end of the day. Then, there comes another joy of Bangkok. Relaxing spa treatments. In Bangkok, you have 3 different choices of spa treatments.
The first choice, is a luxury hotel spa or resort spa. Usually all the big hotels and resorts offer spa services. For example, From Peninsula Hotel (www.bangkok.peninsula.com), or From Mandarin Oriental (www.mandarinoriental.com) have been famous for their spa services. The only problem is the prices. When you enjoy 2 hour service with your girlfriend, the actual bill (including 7% VAT and 10 % service charge) will be easily over $ 500 US (or 17,500 THB).
The second choice is cheap massage parlors. In fact, this is the easiest choice. In almost every street of Bangkok, you can’t miss a massage shop. Here you can get a 2 hour decent thai traditional massage at only $ 12 USD (400 THB). For couples and some good tip (100 THB per each) , this is only $ 28 (1000 THB). Usually, back packers and locals just go with this option. At most of these places, you can also get aromatherapy oil massages. But you have to be careful because many of these places are using just cheapest massage oils. If your skin is sensitive, there’s a big chance, your skin can be in trouble. Also, these places tends to be noisy sometimes, especially the place with many tourists. For example, “Health Land”(www.healthalandspa.com) in Sathorn Road has been popular for some time. But now, they are occupied by Chinese tourists, and people are avoiding the place because it’s too noisy.
The third choice is enjoying at one of independent day spa. Many day spa in Bangkok are consisted of few treatments rooms. Some of these places are named under “beauty clinic” or “treatment center”. Actually some of these places provide quite a good service comparable to luxury hotel spas except that their prices and interior design look much cheaper. One of the example of day spa in Bangkok is “The Sense Of Spa”(www.senseofspa.com) located in Silom Road. They are providing a lot of facial and body treatment services and of course, thai massage and foot reflexology. And the price is quite acceptable. And using their promotions, you can enjoy 2 hour full quality spa services around 58 USD (2,000 Baht) per person. So, for couples, it’s 116 USD (or 4,000 Baht) for 2 hour spa services. You can check their promotion page for most current information. Another nice place I’ve been to is “King and I Spa & Massage” at Sukhumvit 12. (Tel 02-252-5248). I was not able to find their website. “King and I” is located near Asok and convenient from many Sukhumvit places. There are also a lot of places named as “XXXX spa”. But you have to be aware that many places are just more expensive version of “cheap massage parlor”.

Medical consultation in Bangkok, Thailand caters to the diverse needs of patients. Apart from the top-class facilities offered to patients of local origin, most hospitals cater to foreign patients and are very well equiped to handle patients with world class medical expertise.
Medical consultation in Bangkok includes specialized centers that come complete with the most contemporary diagnostic and treatment methods. They also have specialists ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics, neurology to cardiology, and ophthalmology to treatments for sports-related injuries.
In 2000, the Bangkok Heart Institute was the first in Thailand to offer off-pump surgery and minimally invasive cardiac surgery which reduces wound size and time needed for the surgical procedures, leading to faster recovery for the patient.
For emergency coronary cases, a mobile Coronary Care Unit was launched in 2003 to bridge a critical gap in general ambulance service. The only unit of its kind in Thailand, it is staffed by an experienced coronary doctor and two nurses to attend chronic heart patients en route to the hospital.
The doctor may not be available all the time as can be seen in Europe or the U.S. ,but the nursing staff will give you all the attention you require, to such an extent that it might be tough to get a good sleep in hospital, because they will monitor you around the clock to check on your condition.

Medical consultation in Bangkok has few peers when it comes to providing top-class medical treatment, in Asia.
Unfounded fears
I recently put out a question on the internet about having some medical treatment in the Far East.
The answers weren’t very positive, most of them were discouraging, other-scare stories but the main bulk of them were comments like “I just want to wish you the best in your decisions!!”. Not very helpful, but then again, most people (no offence to them) know little about foreign countries-let alone foreign medicine, they focus and center around fear mongering and enjoy the “I knew a girl that…” stories. But let’s have a look at the facts about health care, health centers and surgery in countries like Thailand for example. Apart from the medical tourism widely available, let’s firstly take at a brief insight into the public health service available there. In 2001, a low cost health program was introduced in Thailand. Known as the 30 baht plan because patients could pay just 30B per visit, it has won plenty of support among the rural population of Thailand because now millions of poor Thais all the over the country can afford health care. The program covers most basic illness plus many expensive surgeries and treatment for more serious illnesses like aids and cancer. People who were afraid to go to hospital because they thought that it would be too expensive can finally go and get treatment. The downside of this however, has been the fact that many hospitals and doctors complained that not enough thought was put into it, resulting in huge hospital debts and overworked doctors. Putting these problems aside, compared with many countries including the US, Thailand can now boast that the 30B plan shows the world that even developing countries can implement a universal health plan.
Tourism
On the other side of the coin, worlds apart from the crowded public hospitals, are Thailand’s private hospitals. Treatment for medical tourists range from organ transplants to cosmetic and cardiac surgery, treatment also includes spa, physical and mental therapies- and in 2006 the numbers of treatment seekers coming from abroad topped 150,000 patients. The hospitals themselves boast of 5-star hotel like service but also offer very high quality care that westerners can easily compare to good hospitals back home. Even the US embassy in Bangkok gives the Thai health care system high marks especially for the hospitals in Bangkok. And because of their high standards and latest technology, Thai hospitals are also popular destinations for other Asian countries like Japan and Korea. Hospitals like the famed (ISO 9002 accredited) Samitivej Hospitals, two in the center of Bangkok and another in the center of Sriracha (130 km south of Bangkok) which are comparable to any of the best in the world. Boasting the latest equipment, they offer services from dentistry through a range of practices including the Heart Institute and the Children’s Hospital, most doctors hold US or UK professional certifications, speak fluent English and are accompanied by a range of bi-lingual nurses that can handle many other languages too.
If this is your 1st time to Bangkok, this is a must read! It will save your hassle and money..
Pre-flight
I recommend staying near the Pratunam area, which is famous for their wholesale prices on a large variety of apparel and it is in the centre of Bangkok, which makes it convenient to reach every corner of Bangkok.
There are a number of good hotels along Ratchadamri Road like Courtyard by Mariott and Four Seasons which is just 5mins walk away from major shopping malls like Central World Plaza and 10mins to Pratunam.
For a cheaper alternative Baiyoke Hotel is right smack in the centre of the Pratunam area.
Upon Landing
Taxis are relatively cheap in Bangkok, but to save on the ride to the city, avoid the taxi touters in the airport who will approach you once you exit the arrival hall. Get out of the airport and you will see a booth that will help you call for a cab at extra 50baht.
If you’re really on a budget, you can cross the taxi waiting area just beside the booth towards the main road, and there will be taxis there calling out to you. These cab drivers just don’t want to pay extra charges to go into the taxi waiting area, thus there’s nothing wrong with hitching a ride on these taxis, just make sure before you get on you insist that they go by the meter rather than a fixed price.
If you are going by the meter, there will be 2 tolls along the way which costs 70baht at the time of writing.
The whole ride should cost between 350baht – 550baht depending on which part of Bangkok you’re staying.
Shopping in Bangkok
Designer goods are relatively cheap and can be found in the Central World Shopping Complex and Gaysorn Bangkok Mall. But if you’re looking for local flair at bargain prices, I recommend Pratunam Centre. It is air-conditioned unlike the market across the street and yet bargains can be found. It boosts of 5 storeys and basement of apparel at warehouse prices.
However before you make any purchases, check out these shopping tips to avoid being ripped-off by the locals.
You can find local designs at a slightly higher price at Platinum mall but if you take the time to go through the whole mall, you can find a lot of good bargains as well.
MBK centre is a good place for shopping especially if you’re looking at a variety of electronic goods as well.
Be warned though that Malls close rather early at about 9pm, thus if you’re there just for shopping, start early!
Food
The first thing that comes to your mind is probably Thai food. However Bangkok has a variety of asian cuisine at relatively low prices that are worth trying. All the best food is of course along the street stalls, but for those who are not that adventurous, the Thai food at the food courts in the Malls can make the mark. I personally went for the Japanese food at the restaurants.
For those who are adventurous, make a trip to Chinatown where you will find Shark’s fin soup at amazingly low prices, traditional hong kong style tim sum at the street corners as well as Pad Thai, a local Thai noodle dish, hidden within the alleys. It is worth a day to explore every alley in Chinatown and savour the delicacies.
If you want to savour royal Thai style treatment and food, the Blue Elephant is a recommendation. It is located opposite the BTS station Chong Nonsi. Check out the ambience! It is on the pricey side though, around 300 -600baht per dish, but hey, if you want royal treatment, it comes with a price..
Nightlife
Of course what is a trip to Bangkok without trying their Thai message I highly recommend Health Land Spa if you’re looking for a clean and high end treatment. It is popular among the locals and the tourists and it is located at a few places in Bangkok. The branch at Sathon area is pretty near the Chong Nonsi BTS station as well. Very good service with up-to-date facilities. It feels like a hotel when you enter the place with their own concierge.
A good place to chill out after all the shops have closed would be the open-air pubs just outside Central World Shopping Complex. Not only do they serve good beer but great fingerfood and performances as well. Performances by live bands are common and if you’re lucky a few fashion parades might be in store. Definitely a must go after you have finished shopping in the area and need a break.
This sums up eveything. Check out my experience!

The Bangkok Folk Museum provides its guests with a look into the daily life of middle-class inhabitants of Bangkok in the period of World War II and the immediate epoch that followed. This building was originally the residence of the Suravadee family and conserves the way of life of a twenty year period from 1937 to 1957.
In addition to a garden, the museum features a couple of core two-storey structures. The first building has a room on the second floor where there are the living rooms of the ancestors which put on show the numerous historical objects of the foremost relatives. A King Rama V period Benjarong container assembled from Thai chinaware in five fundamental tints is one of the remnants. Other ceramic articles put on display in the Bangkok Folk Museum date back to the Rattanakosin time.
At the back is the second house of the Bangkok Folk Museum and had been anticipated to be the dwelling and health center of Dr. Francis Christian. Unfortunately he had passed away before being able to get into the household. Dr. Francis Christian was the stepfather of the proprietor. His wide range of cigars and variety of early twentieth century stoves are prominent exhibits that tourists can look forward to seeing during their visit.
One more living quarter presents cleanliness and lavatory amenities that were on hand for the duration of the war. Additionally, it has two bathrooms adjacent to each other. Also put on show is an old kitchen from the age of conflict in Bangkok. Staying in a Bangkok apartment such as the Bangkok President Park offers leisure travelers with an excellent place to stay from which to get around and explore the amazing capital of Thailand.
Bangkok is one of the most frequently visited cities on the planet. This hotbed of tourism is located in the kingdom of Thailand, the world’s 50th largest country in area, but ranked 28th in the world in terms of population. There are incredible luxury hotels in Bangkok at incredible prices, owing to local economic conditions and usual exchange rates. We look in this article at where to go, what to do and the best Bangkok hotels to stay at in Thailand.
If you have come to Thailand for the shopping, the shopping, and the shopping, then Siam is the district you’ll want to stay in. Quite central, and with an excellent public transport system, Siam is home to shopping boutiques, cinemas, bowling alleys and plenty of karaoke bars and booths. If you are after a dose of authentic Thai in Siam though, try Jim Thompson House. Despite the Western style name, it actually consists of several Thai teak houses, actual antiques, set in beautiful tropical gardens. Jim Thompson was an American who did a lot to promote Thai silk in the West. The Erawan shrine also offers a moment of peace in one of the world’s biggest cities, and has a genuine Thai feeling.
If you are staying in Siam, the Siam City Hotel is a great choice for an individual four star experience. It offers luxury with affordability, like so many hotels in Bangkok. There are hundreds of rooms spread over two separate towers, with a plush and sumptuous interior. As well as the standard hotel fare of a spa, business facilities and a health club, Siam City Hotel has an art gallery in-house, and a cafe style bakery on the grounds, if you don’t need the pressure of five-star gourmet cooking!
Shangri-La Bangkok is the first choice of thousands of travelers every year who are looking to experience the luxury of a five-star hotel in Bangkok at the price of a decent meal in their own home in the West. Shangri-La Bangkok has made luxury and quality their selling points. Free of extras, odds and ends, the hotel focuses on the decadence and luxury of your experience. It is set in lush tropical gardens, and has gorgeously appointed rooms featuring ethereal Thai silk, local artwork and serene color schemes. Shangri-La Bangkok also offers serviced apartments for longer term visitors to the city. They are located only a few blocks south of Siam Square. There are so many hotels in Bangkok Thailand, and the city’s official website lists Shangri-La Bangkok in their top ten hotels in the city.
Muay Thai is renowned as one of the world’s most effective martial arts, and the practitioners are incredibly honed, skilled and lightning-fast units. If you are staying in Bangkok, seeing a Muay Thai match is a must…even for the pacifists among you! Be amazed simply by the boxer’s physical perfection and their absolute control over their bodies.
Then once you have imagined all of the bruises on yourself, you can be refreshed and remoulded into a new person with a Thai massage. This massage discipline is a truly invigorating experience. It focuses on energy meridians, circulation and pressure points along with traditional Swedish massage (ordinary Western muscle manipulation). It is known as the lazy person’s yoga – all of the benefits of yoga, without even standing up, let alone buying a mat!
Bangkok is a truly unique experience, and deserves so much more than the stopover it usually is. Stay in luxury hotels in Bangkok for a fraction of the cost of Western ones, and experience uniquely Asian, yet world-famous experiences.
