Travelling to Southeast Asia From the Usa

About 5 years ago, I decided that I wanted to travel to Southeast Asia. The reason? Just to explore and expose myself to something totally new. It was important for me to do this in order to grow intellectually and have a better understanding of other cultures as well as my own. So I started researching flight costs on the Internet. I checked out all the big websites like Orbitz.com and Expedia.com and also tried specific airlines (just to get an idea on costs). I was surprised at how inexpensive it was. I was expecting to see tickets range from $2000-$5000 since it can cost close to $1100 just to travel from coast to coast in the US. Instead, I saw prices ranging from $700-$1800. I was shocked. All this time I’ve been putting off traveling and it was only $700 away? I felt cheated. Since I didn’t have any specific date in mind I played around with different dates/times of year and durations. I finally decided to go in the off-season of summer (it was going to be REALLY hot there) and set a timeframe of 3 weeks. I had no further itinerary and I wanted to keep it that way. I like being able to take things as they come and modify my adventure according to what grabs me when I’m there.

I booked a flight about 3 months in advance for $716. Left San Francisco for a layover in Tokyo and then I had to transfer planes to Bangkok. The total trip took about 17 hours. I know it sounds bad, but it wasn’t at all! Japan airlines (JAL) had video screen in front of each seat with several movies to watch and games to play. I watched two movies, took a long nap and I was in Japan. My other plane wasn’t quite as plush. It was an Asia-based airline, which seemed to be on an old plane, but the food was good and not as many people so I could spread out onto three seats to sleep.

My time spent in Thailand was unforgettable and I hold these memories of the culture and people quite dear to me. I have an entirely new perspective of a world that I never really knew existed. It also helped me to become more appreciative of my own culture and of foreigners. It takes a lot of guts to travel outside your comfort zone, but the effort is well worth it and in my opinion necessary to grow as an individual.

The lessons I learned in this process of traveling as cheaply as possible (since I don’t make a lot of money) is to keep your schedule loose and try as many different dates and durations in order to find the best prices. Layovers are typically going to be cheap that direct flights, and in some cases direct flights just aren’t even possible. The trick is that there is no trick. There is also no magic process to find the best deals. You have to research and learn by doing. If I had to do it all again, I’d probably travel use more taxis or hire a personal driver to show me around as I didn’t realize till later how cheap these things are in a third world country.

Removing the Stress From International Teaching Job Fairs

Attending an international teaching job fair can be very stressful. Whether it is for your first teaching job overseas or your tenth, international job fairs can play havoc with your nerves. This stress can affect your ability to show your best side to recruiters, so eliminating it is a priority. One sure fire way to reduce or even remove the stress you feel is to have a backup plan.

Your backup plan can take many guises. Here are two that I have used successfully in the past to make attending overseas teaching recruitment events more bearable:

1. Plan to attend more than one overseas recruiting fair

There are more than ten job fairs each year that are dedicated to international school teacher recruitment, and you can apply to attend more than one per year. You can even attend more than one organized by the same recruiting agency.

Not every international school attends each fair. You can meet directors from many different international schools if you go to more than one job fair. One way to ensure that you get maximum exposure to recruiters is to apply to attend more than one fair.

The different job fair organizers; Search Associates, CIS and ISS have different schools recruiting with them, so mixing up your job fair registration and attending more than one job fair can increase your chances of finding the perfect overseas teaching position for you.

Many of the job fair organizers offer job fairs in the same locations back to back, so you can fly into Bangkok or London for example and attend two job fairs organized by two agencies in a single trip. Full details of the dates and locations of the job fairs organized by the three big organizers are available in The Complete Guide to Securing a Job at an International School.

2. Know what your next move will be if you do not get offered an international teaching contract this academic year.

When I attended my first international teaching job fair I had two backup plans in the unlikely event that none of the school directors offered me a contract. I did not have to implement either of them, which is a shame in some ways, because my backup plans were almost as exciting as teaching abroad in an international school!

Here are some backup plans you may wish to explore…

> taking a year out and travelling around the world – you can find places you would like to live along the way and begin relationships with recruiters by visiting them at their schools.

> volunteering with an organization that teaches refugees or works with local teachers to improve methodology and pedagogy – this is an excellent way to gain international experience which will make you more attractive to international school recruiters.

> signing up with the Teachers on the Move, a company that finds temporary teachers for international schools to cover for maternity or long term sickness positions.

> applying for a teacher exchange program such as the JET program that places teachers in Japanese public schools, or the VIF program which places overseas trained teachers in American public schools.

Once you have made your decision to attend a job fair and received your invitation, you need to prepare for an intense two days in a pressure-cooker environment. Careful planning prior to the event and conscious networking at the event are the keys to landing a great teaching job abroad.

Girl Friendly Bangkok Hotels – Travel Advice from an Expert

Bangkok has some of the best red light sex districts in Southeast Asia. The availability of sex is the biggest attraction, and that’s why scores of men all over the world flock to Bangkok every year. But what most first time visitors to Bangkok don’t know is that there are hotels that charge you extra money for taking a lady back to your room and there are hotels that don’t care who you bring back (as long as it’s only one guest).

Chances are if you’re reading this, then you’re looking to take a lady back to your room. If that’s so then you want to book a hotel that is girl friendly in Bangkok. Non-girl friendly hotels charge a 500 Baht joiner fee and sadly it makes a guest feel sort of shameful as the security guard is usually the one who stops a guest with lady in tow from entering the elevator. Then you’re led to the reception desk, which is also called the walk of shame where you’re presented with a 500 Baht joiner fee.

To avoid this 500 Baht joiner fee and the walk of shame, you should book a hotel that is considered girl friendly. A prime example of one such hotel is the Peninsula. This is one of the top rated hotels in the world, yet they don’t care if you bring a prostitute back to your hotel. It’s an expensive hotel however. Fortunately there are plenty of affordable ones.

Girl friendly hotels are not just a hotel where men bring ladies to for sex.  These hotels are just like any other ordinary hotel in Bangkok where business people, tourist, travelers and so on stay. They simply have a relaxed policy on guest inviting a lady back to their rooms.

Girl friendly hotels hotel rates range from budget to astronomical. Some classic examples of budget hotels are the Majestic Suites near Nana red light district and Bally’s Suites Silom in the red light district of Patpong. Most of these budget hotels even include free breakfast and have a pool for guests to unwind on a hot afternoon.

What most first time travelers to Bangkok’s want to know is which red light district they should stay next to. The answer is Nana red light district. Nana is a district in Bangkok filled with clubs, beer bars, pubs and most importantly where you will find the most freelance Thai prostitutes on the streets at night. The main focal point however is Nana Entertainment Plaza. It’s a small building, just 3 story tall filled with a manner of go go bars. In the middle is an open arcade with several well known open air bars.

So if you’re looking for a girl friendly hotel, find one in the Nana red light district. That’s where all the action is and that’s where you should be to experience Bangkok’s sex district up front. But make sure you book ahead of time as most of those hotels are very popular.

The Chao Praya River, a Quiet Escape from the Chaos of Bangkok

The Chao Praya River is a wonderful escape from the noise and pollution of Bangkok. For 20baht you can hop on the Chao Praya Express Tourist boat just behind Kho San Road and take a relaxing ride on the river. Located on Thanon Phra Athit, it is easy to find with a Bangkok map. Make your way to Banglamphu, walk along Kho San Road towards the water and you can’t miss it.
If you really want to save money, you can take the local boat for only 8 baht. It is more crowded and there are no tour guides, but it will get you to where you want to go just fine.
I prefer to take the tourist boat. It is quieter, the seats are comfortable and it doesn’t spew exhaust that chokes you as ride along.
It is an efficient and well-run system.  At each pier the deck hand ties the boat up as he blows his whistle relentlessly to let the captain know what is going on.
A tour guide will talk to you about the sights on the shores and you can sit and listen all the way to its end at the Taksin Bridge where you can grab the sky train back to your original destination.  Make sure to stop and sample some of the many attractions before you leave however, because the boat stops at every major tourist attraction along the river. These sights are some of the most spectacular in the city and a must for every tourist.
You an hop on hop off at China Town, the National Museum, Temple of the Dawn , Wat Arun and Wat Pho.  The Maritime Museum, the Gemstone Market, the Oriental Hotel and of course the Grand Palace, Bangkok’s most popular destination.
You could spend days in Bangkok and never leave the river.  Every stop is either right on the rivers banks or within walking distance from the Pier.  Why hire an expensive taxi or guide when you can take a scenic river cruise from sight to sight for less than a dollar.
The temples are extraordinary and Wat Pho is a must see destination. The oldest temple in Bangkok, it is home to the 46 meter long reclining Buddha. Lying down, it stands 15 meters high.
Wat Arun aka The Temple of the Dawn is majestic. It stands on the opposite side of the river from the other attractions and its tower stands proudly looking over the water.
Last but not least is the Grand Palace. Built in 1782 it houses the Royal Temple containing the Emerald Buddha. Walk around its beautiful grounds and take in its grandeur.  This is by far the most visited temple in all of Bangkok.
When visiting the wats, make sure to dress properly.  Have respect for the Buddhist culture and follow the guidelines.  In places like the grand Palace, Wat Arun and Wat Pho wear a long sleeved shirt and a sarong or long skirt. Men should wear long pants and have their shoulders covered.
Wear shoes that are easily slipped on and off, as you will need to take your shoes off before entering each temple, but make sure to have closed toes.   You will have to leave your shoes outside at the entrance of each temple so it is best not to wear your favorite Nikes or expensive leather boot’s. Be comfortable and practical.
Once you are done your day of sight seeing, you can hop back on the tourist or local boat and make your way to the Taksin Bridge where you can catch the sky train back to anywhere that you are staying in the city.  Be it Siam Square, or Sukhumvit.  The sky train is quick, efficient, cheap and fast.
Or better yet, hire a tuk tuk to experience a true Thailand tradition. Zip through the streets in a three-wheeler motorcar and feel the energy of the city.  Barter hard however and never fall for the scam of a free or cheap 10 baht ride because they will take you to every tourist trap and gem market until you buy something.  Once they have their commission, you may not have a lift back to your hotel.
With a good map, a guide book and a firm resolve to stick to your plans, getting around Bangkok can be a lot of fun and a few days by the river can be a rejuvenating experience.

A Guide to Using the Dusseldorf Airport From Rhino Car Hire

Dusseldorf is the capital city of the German state of North Rhine Westphalia and Dusseldorf international airport is the third largest airport in the country after Frankfurt international airport and Munich international airport.

Because Dusseldorf international airport (airport code DUS) is located almost 10 kilometres outside of the city of Dusseldorf, you will most likely want to hire a car to complete your journey when leaving the terminal.

The other airport in the Dusseldorf area is airport Weeze (airport code NRN) which is located some 80 kilometres away from Dusseldorf and has various low cost flights.

Ryanair has the most international flights from airport Weeze to destinations such as Palma de Mallorca and Alicante in Spain and Bologna in Italy. The German airline Hamburg International flies from Dusseldorf airport Weeze to places in the Middle East such as Sharm El Sheik and Tel Aviv too.

Although Dusseldorf airport Weeze only had one and a half million passengers last year, this was such a massive increase on previous years that it is one of Europe’s fastest growing airports.

A Bangkok Travel Guide From Rhino Car Hire in Thailand

One of the worlds most lively, vibrant and unique cities, visiting Bangkok is an unforgettable experience and having a car is a great way to get around.

Experience the pulsating nightlife of downtown Bangkok. Though the city has a reputation for having a seedy side, it is in fact quite safe and everywhere you are greeted by brilliant tropical foliage such as bougainvillea. Bangkok is polluted and overcrowded though, while the heat is often stifling.

More than 11 million people live in Bangkok which is massive. Thai people are incredibly friendly and so you are sure to find this a warm and welcoming city whether you come here for business or pleasure. Visitors will also find a fascinating mix of traditional Thai culture and temples with fast paced Western culture.

Bangkok became the capital of Thailand when it was created in the late eighteenth century by the Chakri dynasty of monarchs. Dont miss amazing sights such as the Ancient City, the Anantasamakhom Throne Hall and the Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium. The temples of Wat Benchamabophit and Wat Bowon Niwet are also spectacular, as is the King Taksin the Great Monument and the King Rama I the Great Memorial.

Bangkok is one of the best culinary cities in the world and the spices and tastes of Bangkok are some of its most memorable aspects. You can eat the traditional Pad Thai dish at curry houses right across the city.

For the more adventurous there are a range of insects such as grasshoppers and scorpions which can be eaten. If you want to learn how to cook Thai food there are a number of restaurants which do courses, the Blue Elephant chain does a relatively pricey introduction but you do get a Blue Elephant apron for your trouble.

For those who prefer not to eat Thai food there is excellent international food on offer too. Another quintessentially Thai pastime is kick boxing. Take a class or watch a match depending on how brave you are feeling. To learn more about Buddhism you can go to The International Buddhist Meditation Centre where donations are welcome as attendance is free of charge. To try your hand at Thai massage go to the Wat Po Temple in Rannakosin.

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport is Southeast Asias busiest airport and the departures area is famous for its lavish shopping opportunities. Travellers will find all the conveniences they need here including excellent restaurants, though you should be aware t hat once you have cleared security there are no facilities or toilets.

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport has the airport code BKK and it is a main transport hub for Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways. Other airlines which use the airport are SGA Airline, Air Asia and PBair. Allow plenty of time to get around Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport because it is considered to be the worlds largest terminal building. There are a number of hotels located near to the airport for those who are making international transfers. The smaller Don Muang airport was the main airport of Bangkok up until 2006.

Having a car is definitely the easiest way to get from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport to the city itself, a 30 kilometre journey eastwards. It also saves you money on expensive taxi rides (for Thailand) or the inconvenience of having to wait in line for public transport. Car hire Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport is a cheap and cheerful way to get around the city, though the traffic will certainly raise your heart rate and drivers should know that motorcycle accidents are very common.

Many tourists who go to Thailand frequent the go-go bars, though they should know there are strict rules of etiquette inside and having a passport on you is advisable in case there is a police raid and you dont fancy spending the night in jail. Also Bangkok is famous for chicks with dicks, otherwise known as ladyboys. The Adams apple is often a giveaway but some have really mastered the art of fitting in!

Another word of warning regards the chained elephants which are dragged through the streets. The owners charge tourists to have their picture taken with the elephants but if you do so you are condoning this cruel practice.
